Social Media Trends: Going Back in Time

With the pandemic that has been happening for almost 2 years now, there has been a TikTok boom. TikTok’s trends shift within hours showing amazingly rapid speed. Out of all the TikTok trends that we have passed by, there was this one trend that caught many people’s attention and won favor over the viewers of TikTok. It is the concept of nostalgic (or nostalgia). Let’s see what the exact definition of these are:

Nostalgic(adj.): characterized by or exhibiting feelings of nostalgia

Nostalgia(noun): a sentimental longing or wistful affection for the past, typically for a period or place with happy personal associations.

Nostalgic (or nostalgia) has been in the spotlight consistently and loved by the audience consistently as well. In the world where time flies, we are living our lives and making our way to our future. Because nostalgic/nostalgia is all about the past, people will think or feel that it’s a phenomenon that will never happen or to be experienced again. And maybe that’s what makes people feel like they want to go back in the past.

People might think this is just meaningless flashbacks of us recalling the past we had fun in. However, it’s actually not a meaningless act, but rather it stimulates us to be more positive in a way of living one’s life. Research by Linda Rising shows that reflection of nostalgia stimulates us to be more optimistic about the future by reaffirming social connection within us. And from recalling the significant and memorable moments about the past, it arranges an inventiveness for an optimistic future.

So why don’t we get on with nostalgic vibes and enjoy the moment of feeling nostalgia instead?
