Influencers are social media personalities with loyal, enthusiastic and engaged audiences that they gain through content sharing. They make regular posts about a topic that generates social conversations, drives engagement and create trends amongst their audience.
Influencers by the Numbers
Social media users with a small, niche audience of 1,000 - 10,000 followers.
Social media users with a bigger, niche audience of 10,000 - 50,000 followers.
Social media users with 50,000 - 500,000 followers.
High profile social media users with 50,000 - 500,000 followers.
Celebrities or well-known social media users with a minimum following of 1,000,000 followers.
Influencers by Channel
YouTube Creators, also known as YouTubers create high quality video content to engage with their followers. Some of these content include narrative storylines, tutorials, reviews, personal vlogging and TV-style content.
Instagrammers mainly create highly visual content of their most #goals-worthy moment, though Instagram is also becoming more popular with video content because of IGTV and Instagram Stories. Typically, beauty, lifestyle, fitness, food and travel influencers perform best
Probably one of the newest emerging platforms, TikTokers upload and share videos up to 15 seconds in length, often featuring dancing, lip-syncing and other comedic skits. TikTok audiences can range widely from young (at least 13 years of age) to old.
If you think that the number of people playing games online is huge, the number of people watching online games and live streaming of games is even bigger. Gaming influencers usually live stream their games on Twitch where fans follow in hopes of becoming better at gaming.
As long as social media and its commercial value continues to grow, the influencer definition will continue to evolve. Traditional ideas of celebrity don’t have as much impact as they used to anymore. The line between what defines an influencer and what defines a celebrity is also blurring.
