Cili, now part of the WILD family, gives us some insight about her career and life as a young content creator.
Before we start, give our readers a quick introduction of yourself!
Cili: My name is Cili (it’s pronounced just like “silly”) and I’m 21 years old. I'm half Chinese, half Hungarian, and I was born and raised in China. I also spent a few years living in Malaysia and Canada growing up. I’m a content creator and post mostly about makeup and fashion, but honestly, ever since the pandemic, I try not to think too much about what I’m posting. I realized that sometimes, posting dumb, unserious content can make others feel a little better amidst the pandemic happening globally right now.
What does a typical day in your week look like?
Cili: Hmmm... For me, most of my days really differ for different times throughout the year. For example, a day before a major exam can be 4 cups of coffee and me, sitting in front of my laptop all day studying. But on a completely relaxed day, I would spend my entire day cuddled up in my blanket watching Korean dramas, anime, or my all-time favourite, Bojack Horseman. Oh right! I also hang out with my friends sometimes but that would be what my days evolve around for the most part!
Who was your inspiration for starting your career?
Cili: To be honest, I’m not really sure. But I do remember that, when I moved to Malaysia, I started watching makeup tutorials religiously on YouTube and my sister definitely gave me the push I needed to start my own YouTube channel and upload my first video. So I guess you could say that my sister was the one who helped start my career.
Have you ever thought of giving up your career as a content creator at any point?
Cili: I would be lying if I told you that I never thought of giving up. But I can tell you why I keep doing what I’m doing. I realized the power that social media has, specifically, on my self esteem. I was considered ugly back when I was in school. It was really hard for me to live up to the beauty standards growing up in China. In China, I was a freckled, buck-toothed girl who wasn’t stick-skinny and wore the hijab. I was the exact definition of odd. But, moving to Malaysia made me realize how stupid I was for hating myself, just because I couldn’t live up to the beauty standards in China. I realized that the content I create actually encourages others, specifically my followers to be confident just the way they are, whether it fits with the beauty standards or not. And that, I would say, is what has kept me motivated to do what I do.
What would you consider to be the most memorable moment of your career, so far?
Cili: There was this one photo that I posted when I barely had any followers. It was a makeup look where I decided to do my eyebrows a little differently. I remember the first comment on the photo being, “OMG I love your eyebrows!” The second comment, “Eww Cili your eyebrows are so ugly.” It was one of those moments where I realized that you can never please everybody and that there was no point trying too hard to please everyone. There will always be people who love what you do, and there will be those who might not. And you know what? That’s okay!
What would you say is the best part about your career?
Cili: I would say the best part about my career is being able to support myself financially through university. Something that my parents and I are really proud of. I am incredibly grateful to be able to do what I do, and have people who I know will support me throughout my career. I know that my life would have been entirely different if it weren’t for social media and me taking the courage to start creating my own content.
